Emergency supplies — bundles of warm blankets, heavy duty tarps, buckets and other items — are lined up on the frozen ground for families to collect as part of UNICEF’s ongoing humanitarian response in Afghanistan, where crisis conditions continue to deteriorate.

Displaced families in Herat are among the most vulnerable.  Many are living in tents or abandoned buildings. Food is scarce. Cases of pneumonia and acute respiratory infections are on the rise among children already weakened by malnutrition.

UNICEF estimates that more than half of Afghanistan’s population is in need of some form of humanitarian assistance. Response plans aim to reach 8 million children in 2022 across all program areas, including health care, nutrition, water and sanitation, education and child protection.
